How you care for your clothes matters more than you think. In fact, up to 25% of a garment’s environmental impact comes from how it’s washed and worn over time. We know life gets busy, so this isn’t about perfection. It’s about small, thoughtful choices that help your pieces last longer (and look better doing it).
Some fabrics need a little extra care. Garments made with rayon or viscose are sensitive to heat and water, which can lead to shrinkage or changes in shape - dry cleaning helps maintain their original fit and feel over time. We also recommend dry cleaning for tailored pieces like blazers, outerwear, and specialty fabrics such as sequins or delicate trims. Whenever possible, opt for a green dry cleaner for a more environmentally conscious choice.
We get it, dry cleaning isn’t always convenient. If you’d rather care for your garments at home, here’s how to do it gently.
For lightly worn pieces, steaming is often enough, heat helps kill bacteria and refresh fabric without the need for a full wash. You can use a handheld steamer or toss your garment in the dryer with a damp cloth for a quick refresh. It uses less water and energy and helps keep your clothes in better shape over time.
For rayon or viscose styles labeled “dry clean only,” you can gently hand wash at home using cold water and a delicate detergent. Avoid twisting or wringing the fabric - instead, roll it in a towel to remove excess water, then reshape and lay flat to dry. Once dry, lightly steam or press to bring it back into shape. A heads up: some shrinkage may occur with this method. It’s the most eco-friendly and cost-effective option, but if you’re unsure, dry cleaning is the safest choice.
At-home dry cleaning kits are a great middle ground, they refresh and steam garments while helping maintain their shape.
Its not about doing everything perfectly, just doing what you can.
• Wash less - your clothes, and the planet will thank you!
• Use cold water whenever possible
• Skip the dryer and hang or lay flat to dry
• Choose plant-based or low-waster detergents
• Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets
• Use a microplastic filter or guppy bags for synthetics
• Steam between wears to refresh instead of washing
• Turn items inside out before washing
• Use a mesh bag for delicate pieces
Because knitwear needs a little extra love.
• Fold instead of hanging to prevent stretching
• Store with cedar to help keep moths away
• Use a pill shaver to refresh the surface and keep them looking like new
• Turn garments inside out before washing
• Skip the dryer
Keeping clothes out of the landfill is one of the most impactful things we can do. If something no longer fits your life, consider giving it a second one:
• Donate to local thrift stores or community organizations
• Use textile recycling programs for well-worn pieces
• Resell through consignment or platforms like Poshmark or ThredUp
Every extra wear, and every thoughtful next step, makes a difference.
